What is Child/Adolescent Analysis? Child analysis is an intensive form of psychotherapy aimed at helping the child/adolescent free himself from his suffering by understanding the unconscious psychological conflicts which contribute to his impaired functioning. A child is just as able to understand and gain insight into the causes of his problems as an adult is. However, as a young child often cannot put his problems and worries into words, child analysis uses the child's play, as well as talk, as a mode of communication. Playing is natural to children and is their way of letting us know what is on their mind. Children are seen four times weekly in psychoanalysis. Parents play a vital role in the analysis of their children and are seen by the child analyst as often as weekly during the course of the analysis.
Adolescent analysis is very similar to adult analysis with talking as the main mode of communication. The goal is to help the young person gain understanding of the unconscious fantasies influencing his development. In the course of the analysis, the analyst may consult occasionally with the adolescent's parents. Special training is necessary to learn the techniques needed to work with children and adolescents. This training is available at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, which maintains an active child and adolescent program.
