Scholars Program

Manuel Furer, Chair

Goals

The Program for Scholars is designed to provide academic scholars with a non-clinical education in psychoanalysis. This includes courses in: Theory; Development; Psychopathology; Research; and Gender, Phantasy, and Sexuality Tracks and third and fourth year Continous Case Conferences.

Admissions Process

Two interviews are required and will consist of an assessment of professional achievement, motivation, and character.  Applications should be made prior to March 1, 2011 in order to begin classes in September 2011.  For information please contact Dr. Furer.

Requirements

Applicants are expected to have achieved exceptional scholarly work in his/her field and to have completed a Ph.D. or be advanced in completing a Ph.D.

Program

The Program will be individually tailored to each scholar's educational needs.  Technique will not be included.  Scholars are encouraged, although not required, to pursue a personal analysis.  Being in analysis is helpful in understanding psychoanalytic principles and is advantageous in work as a scholar.

Advisor

Each scholar accepted into the program will be assigned an advisor.  The advisor will provide an orientation with a discussion of the necessity of confidentiality of clinical material used in the courses.  The advisor, in consultation with the Chairman of the Curriculum Committee, or her representative, will assist each scholar in planning his/her curriculum.  The advisor will attend the Progression Committee meeting; the Progression Committee will oversee the progression of each scholar through his/her program.
