Externship Program in Doctoral Psychology

The Externship Program of The New York Psychoanalytic Institute offers a one year part time, clinical experience to Ph.D. and Psy.D. students in clinical psychology and allied fields. The aim of the program is to provide excellent clinical training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy to advanced psychology students through an opportunity to treat a diversity of patients with close supervision.

THE CORE CURRICULUM

The core experience (16-20 hours per week) includes a minimum of five-six patient hours per week, two hours of psychoanalytically-oriented supervision, more if needed, a didactic seminar on Psychoanalytic Theory, another on Psychoanalytic Principles of Psychotherapy, a monthly seminar on Clinical Applications of Psychoanalytic Theory to Psychotherapy, and a weekly seminar on Diagnostic Testing in which the standard battery of intelligence and projective tests are discussed. One hour of supervision is provided weekly for each battery. In addition to supervision, each Extern is assigned a Mentor for advice and direction about career development. Library privileges are offered as well as an invitation to Tuesday night scientific lectures and free admission to Extension Division courses. Optional experiences include participation in the Parent Child Center, a service to mothers and infants, from birth-three years of age. Each student may participate as a participant-observer in the parent-infant groups and attend a weekly clinical conference. Another option that may be possible involves attendance at monthly Affiliated Staff Conferences where ongoing analyses are presented and discussed by senior analysts. Research consultations on doctoral dissertations that may benefit from a psychoanalytic perspective are available. Please contact Dr. Braun re: additional information.

Externship offers to students may not be made until 9:00am on March 5, 2012.
